Bingu Stadium vandalised

Enemies of development visited Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe to steal and vandalise waters taps and toilet equipment during Monday’s Luso TV Bus Ipite Bonanza in Lilongwe.

In view of the theft, stadium owner, Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, has admitted that there is need to renovate some areas at BNS before Malawi National Football Team host China Select on the official opening of the facility on January 28.

Monday’s second-leg match was part of pre-opening activities for the Chinese Government-funded 40,500-seater stadium.

The ministry’s Director of Sports, Jameson Ndalama, said during the game, they observed serious security concerns which need to be addressed before the big event.

“After the game, there was too much congestion from the stadium to the main road. We had enough security personnel, but we overlooked some areas. For instance, fans were able to access the VIP section using some routes,” Ndalama said.

He confirmed that water taps and toilet materials were stolen, adding that the organising committee was assessing the damage.

After the game, fans and teams spent an hour on queues as they struggled to get out of the parking area.

Some spectators parked their cars in the residential area in Gulliver.

Some people have argued that roads leading to the stadium were supposed to be dual-carriage. The stadium can also accommodate 400 cars at the parking area.

Big Bullets fan assaults PS

Nyasa Big Bullets fan, Beleti Severe, popularly known as Billy One, was on Monday arrested for allegedly assaulting Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Sam Madula at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, yesterday confirmed the arrest, saying Severe, aged 32 years, will answer a charge of assault.

According to Dandaula, the suspect was expected to appear before the Lilongwe Magistrates Court either yesterday or today.

It is reported that the Bullets’ influential fan tried to force his way into the stadium through the VIP section, but Madula tried to prevent him since the section was not free for all.

But Severe reacted angrily and beat up Madula, who sustained a cut on his face.

Madula was not available for his comment on Tuesday.

Bullets’ Supporters’ Committee Chairperson, Stone Mwamadi, said he was aware that Severe was arrested, but claimed that he did not witness the incident.

Mwamadi urged Bullets’ fans to exercise discipline.

“I do not know what really happened. The only information is that he was arrested, but I am yet to gather details on the issue,” Mwamadi said.

In 2015, Billy One was reportedly also among Bullets’ fans that attacked the then coach, Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Severe hails from Traditional Authority (TA) Juma in Mulanje District.
