TNM Super League side Blue Eagles has named Malawi National Football Team attacker Schumacher Kuwali as its new captain.

Kuwali has taken over the armband from goalkeeper John Soko, who captained the team for the better part of last season.

Former Eagles coach Gerald Phiri Snr and his technical panel had chosen Soko as the team’s on-field leader after stripping winger Micium Mhone of the captaincy.

Eagles Coach Eliya Kananji said the club’s technical team, supporters and executive committee had agreed to appoint Kuwali to the position, with Soko deputising him.

He said new signing Sankhani Mkandawire is the third captain.

“We, as a technical team, met the club’s top officials and supporters on Monday to sort out issues to do with the choice of our captain. We therefore settled for Kuwali, with Soko as his deputy.

“We also chose Sankhani as our third captain because of his experience in the game. We are sure that these players will help us achieve what we want this season,” Kananji said.

Kuwali thanked Eagles’ management for entrusting him with leadership of his fellow players in the 2022 season.

“I personally value teamwork as an important ingredient to the performance of any team. Every stakeholder at the club wants good results after last season’s misery. I have taken the challenge to lead my fellow players. Of course I know it won’t be easy but with teamwork, we will succeed.

“Blue Eagles is a big side that needs to be winning silverware every season. I am therefore urging my fellow players and other stakeholders in our team to work as a family so that we can bring back glory,” Kuwali said.

Eagles had a season to forget last year as they finished empty-handed and only survived relegation on the final day of the season with a 3-1 hammering of Mighty Wanderers.
