Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, arrived in the country Monday through Kamuzu International Airport (Kia) in high spirits after clinching a silver medal at the Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa.
However, the senior women’s side did not dine with the State President Lazarus Chakwera due to the President’s tight schedule.
Sports Minister Ulemu Msungama said they were still making arrangements for the President to host the Scorchers today.
“We must understand that when I was making a request about this, the President had other commitments already; so, it was difficult to squeeze in the Scorchers. At the moment, we are trying to make arrangements to have the event Tuesday [Today],” he said.
Msungama felt the Scorchers would be inspired to aim high after meeting the President.
“Our President Lazarus Chakwera is for all sporting activities; so, the Scorchers deserve meeting him,” he said.
Meanwhile, State House Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda did not confirm if the dinner had been shifted to today from Monday.
“I will get back to you in the morning,” he said.
The Scorchers lost to Tanzania 1-0 in the final. They reached the final after beating the hosts, South Africa 3-2 in the semifinal.
In group stages, the Scorchers beat Mozambique 3-2, Angola 2-0 but lost to South Africa 2-1.
