Scouts target Cosafa tourney
Malawi under-20 national football team players have every reason to impress at the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Youth Championship in Zambia.
The junior Flames stand a chance of marketing themselves to scouts of clubs in Africa and Europe.
Cosafa Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Suzgo Nyirenda, confirmed the availability of the scouts, who are looking for the next generation of great talent from Southern Africa.
“There are many coming [to Zambia]. There is also one scout from Russia. They have realised that this is the right age-group to scout talent from. This is an opportunity for the players to showcase their talent,” the former Football Association of Malawi General Secretary said.
Among the European scouts expected to witness the competition, which kicks off tomorrow, is Italian Omar Sciolia.
Reports indicate that Zambian giants such as Power Dynamos, Zanaco and Zesco will also use home-ground advantage to scout for talent from the tournament.
Boasting talent such as Hadji Wali, Ronald Pangani, Patrick Phiri and Peter Banda, Malawi will kick-start the championship with a match against Swaziland at Arthur Davies Stadium tomorrow at noon.
Malawi are in the same group with hosts and holders Zambia and guest nation Uganda.
The junior Flames’ next matches are against Zambia and Uganda on December 8 and 11, respectively.
