See things differently

By Patrick Achitabwino:

We keep on mourning over lack of opportunities, mourning over inability to make breakthroughs in our life, mourning that others seem to get all the best jobs and best promotions when things are clearly not going our way.

We get disillusioned and cloak around our hearts and minds coat of disappointment. The problem is not that we are encountering problems, the problem is that we do not change the way we look at problems. When you start looking at what you are going through from a different perspective, you will actually laugh at yourself that you wasted time complaining. Solutions that would have made a difference to you and millions many others were just close to you. You had a narrow focused view and that closed the world of opportunities to you.

Look at things differently; give yourself a new focus that will make a difference. Anthony Robbins was right; the fastest way to change how you feel about anything is to change what you are focusing on. Your business may be facing tough times. Look at that differently, you will surely realise that there are some elements of your business that if only you change, all could be better. It might be you are acquiring debts that you are not investing in the business, or you are living a life that is beyond your means. You think that debt provides you with a means for merry making.

In case you have been failing examinations, stop getting worried. Look at your failure from a different perspective. Probably it emanates from your inherent belief that you are not a best student, you were born out of ignorant parent, you lack financial support. Start looking at the poverty that surrounds you as a canon that will fire you to success. It is the pains of that poverty which will be the biggest driver to catapulting you out of the meshes of abject poverty.

Imagine what makes chefs very different. It is the very same things they all see, they all have access to. It is just how a chef would look at creating a recipe from the same tomatoes, onions, chickens and all readily available foodstuffs that will differentiate him or her from any other. The chef does not have a tomato made in heaven; neither is his chicken spiced in another unknown wonderland nor the salads he mixes injected with sweeteners in a garden. It is how the chef looks at the very same things every chef has and decides to mix them differently that makes a difference.

In life, people that have made a difference long decided to look at things differently. So many people used to see rudimentary products in a dump site but William Kamkwamba made a windmill out of the very same things. Babies and toddlers were dropping baby bottles for generations until a mom invented the two-handled bottle. It is said that auctions are as old as commerce, but eBay has built a big business putting auctions online. Even the house you are staying in, imagine that somebody looked at the very same soil everybody had access to and decided to come up with bricks. In life we have more opportunities than we can comprehend. It is our narrow confined view that blinds us to the waiting reality.

Take time to read biographies of the successful people, one remarkable thing with them is that they opted to see things differently. If you look at the background of Jimmy Koreia Mpatsa and all the financial problems and job losses he faced, you could hardly believe that he had the capacity and capability to be the billionaire he is at present. A story is told of Kondowe of the famous Kang’ombe house that he walked on foot with a small cow from Mzimba to Blantyre. Kalua of Combine Cargo had to endure being jobless and restless. Thomson Mpinganjira looked at banks and believed he could own one. In all these successful people, one trait is common and that is that they started seeing things differently. No wonder the uneducated Mike Mlombwa walked from Neno to Blantyre on foot in search for his dream and now owns Countrywide Car Hire and recruits even the top educated professionals in his business. He saw things differently.

Any difficult situation you are passing through now is a wonderful opportunity to open your eyes to a different reality, to a world of opportunities. You have to realise that most of the times we miss seeing opportunities because they come to us disguised in dirty overalls. While you look at sewage and close your nostrils, others look at the business in the sewage and operate sewage pumping businesses. Two people, same eyesight, different focus. It is how you look at things that will make a difference in your life.
