Seniors play golf again
Over 30 experienced golfers converged on Country Club Limbe on Sunday for an invitational tournament aimed at reviving seniors’ golf.
It was the first seniors’ golf tournament after three years in the doldrums.
At the end of the tournament, Phillip Phambana emerged the champion when he posted 38 points.
Well-known veteran, James John Chikapa was counted in after scoring 34 points to finish second, while James Chimwaza was counted out to third place.
John Magombo, who ended on fourth position with 33 points, won the nearest to-the pin on hole number 13.
In the ladies’ section, Beatrice Mangwana finished first with 27 points, while Lillian Kawaza was second with 20 points.
Phambana said he felt on top of the world having won the tournament on its return.
“It feels so great. This is the first seniors’ tournament in over three years, and I am privileged to win it,” he said.
Southern Region Senior golfers’ captain, Gilbert Chirwa, said it was important to revive the competition.
Chirwa noted that following the exit of expatriates from the committee, there was no support to the sport especially from indigenous Malawians.
“We met last year to discuss how to revive the sport,” he said.
The competition’s convener, Bashir Sharrif, said they will put in place mechanisms to play regularly so that experienced golfers can pass on skills to up-and-coming players.
