Shayona to double cement production

Shayona Cement Corporation expects phase two of its factory expansion plans to be completed by November this year which will see the company doubling production.

Currently, Shayona has a daily production of 600 tonnes of cement.

The company’s administrator Spencer Mpaka disclosed on Wednesday that the company has invested $60 million in the project.

“We are making great progress and the new plant is expected to be commissioned before the end of this year. It will help to improve production of cement so that we satisfy the demand. It will also curtail the imports that we are having now,” Mpaka said.

The project will also include the installation of a clinker manufacturing plant at the Shayona base in Kasungu.

Meanwhile, the company has built a house for Group Village Headman Mwimila as part of its corporate social responsibility. The new house was handed over to the traditional leader on Wednesday.

“We have a very good relationship with the communities surrounding the factory. As Shayona, we believe this is one way of giving back to the community,” he said.

Kasungu District Commissioner James Kanyangalazi hailed Shayona for creating employment for Malawians.

In his remarks, Mwimila also thanked the company for the timely assistance.

Annually, the company sets aside an estimated K30 million for its corporate social responsibility activities.

The company recently donated medical equipment and drugs at the clinic within the factory and Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Shayona Cement Corporation started operations in 1994.
