Filmmaker Shemu Joyah leaves the country on Tuesday for Germany on a study tour which will, among other engagements, see him attending the Berlin International Film Festival.

According to a press statement from FirstDawn Arts, the tour has been made possible with support from German Ambassador to Malawi, Juergen Borsch, who tried his best to have Joyah on the programme after being impressed by his The Road to Sunrise movie.

Borsch attended the premiere of The Road to Sunrise in Lilongwe.

The movie did well last year as it got the Best Movie- Southern Africa in the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCAs) and also received seven nominations in the Africa Movie Academy Awards (Amaa).

The film was also submitted to the Oscars 2019 but was not nominated.

Joyah hailed the German Ambassador for the gesture Thursday, saying he would learn a lot on the trip.

“It is a trip which has come at the right time. It is an opportunity for exposure and networking with different faces in the film industry including financiers. It is also a great opportunity to learn,” Joyah said.

The study tour will begin with Joyah attending the opening ceremony of the the Berlin International Film Festival. The festival runs from February 6 to 14.

The filmmaker has also been invited to screen The Road to Sunrise in Hannover on February 18 2019 through the Hannover-Blantyre partnership.

Joyah will also have a chance to visit the German Film Archive, which is the Museum for Film and Television, visit the Medienboard Berlin- Brandenburg GmbH, an agency for film financing and location promotion as well as attend a reception of film experts, artists, journalists at the Goethe- Institute.

He will also visit some original shooting locations of films such as Bourne Supremacy, Run Lola Run, Goodbye Lenin, Around the World in 80 Days and The Lives of Others.

The tour will also take Joyah to Konrad Wolf University of Film, where he will attend panel discussions with film experts at the World Cinema Fund, which is a joint film-funding initiative.

Joyah is expected back on February 20 2019.
