Enlightened Christian Gathering (EGC) Communications Director Ephraim Nyondo confirmed Friday the arrest of his boss by the South African Directorate for Priority Investigations (Hawks).
According to the notice issued by the church addressed to its faithful and South African media, Bushiri was arrested by armed members of the police at his Sparkling Waters Hotel in Rustenburg.
According to the communication, they took the prophet and his wife in handcuffs to Pretoria.
They have been charged with fraud and money laundering.
Bushiri, known as Major 1, was born and raised in Malawi.
He is a Christian preacher, motivational speaker, author and businessperson.
He founded and leads ECG, a Christian non-denominational evangelical church.
The church has headquarters in Pretoria, South Africa with branches in other African countries and around the world.
Bushiri also runs a global investment company, Shepherd Bushiri Investments (Pty) Ltd, which is based in Sandton near Johannesburg.
