People from the area of Senior Chief Kwataine in Ntcheu were on Tuesday given a lifeline through a maize donation courtesy of South Africa-based Malawian prophet Shepherd Bushiri.
Thousands of villagers living within and surrounding Gongolo Village thronged the area where distribution of the relief maize took place.
Over 1,400 bags, each weighing 25kg, were offloaded and distributed to the needy.
Speaking after making the donation, Bushiri said apart from helping people spiritually, the church has an obligation to help people materially.
“I have the heart for people. I love people and I believe God sent me as a man of God not only to assist people spiritually, but also socially. So basically, I saw the need for such a gesture after realizing that hunger was looming in most parts of the country,” he said. He added that apart from Ntcheu, people from other districts such as Dowa and Kasungu also stand to benefit from the donations whose initial budget was K35 million, but later revised due to the increasing number of people in need of help.
Asked on whether he intends to sell his personal jet to better help the needy people as some quarters suggested, Bushiri challenged:
“That’s the mentality of many Malawians which is bad. They always want to control what other people have. I am not a president, I am not a politician and I will never be. You can only control a president because you voted them into office. What I have is my own personal wealth realized from my various businesses,” he argued.
Bushiri further deplored the tendency of many Malawians of pulling down people who seem to be progressing in their lives.
“Let us, as Malawians, remove the pull-him down syndrome. We seem to be 400 years behind in terms of our thinking. Let us promote and celebrate each other when things are moving in the right direction,” he said.
Senior Chief Kwataine commended Bushiri for the timely donation.
“It is a fact that most areas in the country face food shortages. We are not spared as Ntcheu. It is only fair to say thank you very much to the prophet and his ministry for considering to donate the food items to this area,” he said.
Bushiri and the Prophetic Channel team flew into the country last week on a mission to alleviate the suffering of many Malawians that are on the verge of suffering the pangs of the impending hunger.
