Shepherd Bushiri sells maize at K100 per kg

BUSHIRI—We must put aside our differences

Leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church (ECG), Shepherd Bushiri, has announced that he will start selling maize on Malawian markets at K5,000 per 50 kilogramme (kg) bag from today.

Bushiri, who is based in South Africa, said he has come on the market after noting that no one took his idea seriously when he presented it to the authorities last year.

“Because nobody took me seriously, I have decided to take it up alone; I am from tomorrow [today] going to sell maize at the cheapest price ever.

“I am left with no choice, but to take up this initiative myself for the sake of the people of Malawi,” he said when addressing the nation on local television networks.

The ECG leader said the first markets will be in the districts of Ntcheu, Salima, Chikwawa, Karonga, Chitipa and Phalombe then to the rest of the country.

Bushiri said every buyer will be required to provide a national identity card to keep away vendors who would plan to buy the commodity and sell it at a higher price.

He urged political leaders to start putting the interests of Malawians first.

“As a country, we must reach a stage where no matter our political affiliations, we must put aside our differences and come together and provide a solution for all Malawians,” Bushiri said.

Currently, due to shortages, maize prices in some parts of the country have reached up to K20,000 per 50kg translating to K400 per kg.

The price of K5,000 per 50kg bag which is being offered by Bushiri, translates to K100 per kg.

According to government statistics, 1.8 million Malawians need food aid.
