Sheriffs in Lilongwe on Wednesday invaded the Department of Tourism headquarters where they impounded a bus belonging to the department.
The sheriffs took the action allegedly because of the department’s failure to settle an outstanding bill with a security company.
At the time the Times Group crew visited the scene, the situation was tense as staff gathered outside the building after the Sheriffs had already left with the bus.
However, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Tourism and Culture Else Tembo could not divulge more details on the issue, saying she had just returned from Parliament.
“As you can see I’ve just walked into my office from Parliament. This is an ambush because I’ve not been briefed on what happened so I cannot answer anything,” said Tembo.
However, it is understood that the department accrued a bill of unspecified millions of kwachas with a security company providing the service at Umodzi Park.
Apart from the bus, the sheriffs wanted to impound furniture and computers from one of the offices at the department but did not after officers protested.
Umodzi Park is owned by Umodzi Holdings, a fully government-owned company.
