Silver Strikers goalkeeper Brighton Munthali has asked the club to let him leave on loan if he is not guaranteed game-time next season.
Munthali lost his place as first choice goalkeeper at Silver to in-form youthful goalkeeper Charles Thom, who has since won two caps for the Malawi National Football Team, The Flames.
Sources confided in this paper that the former Wizards FC goalkeeper has already informed the technical panel about his desire to leave the club.
“He is unhappy due to lack of game time. The technical panel knows that he wants to leave,” said the source.
Munthali was not readily available for his comment.
Silver Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali could neither confirm nor deny.
“I have been out of office for one week. But Brighton just called me to say that he wanted us to talk,” Chimbali said.
The goalkeeper has reportedly expressed interest in joining another capital city side Blue Eagles in search of game time.
Eagles Chairperson Alexander Ngwala said the club had not expressed interest in signing the goalkeeper.
“There is no formal discussion between us and Silver. We are following the developments with keen interest,” Ngwala said.
If he leaves the club, Silver will remain with Thom and Steven Micheta, who is also a good goalkeeper.
Munthali spent the better part of the 2020-21 season on the bench as Thom had a good season, keeping 16 clean sheets in all competitions last season.
Due to lack of game time, Munthali was Flames’ fourth-choice goalkeeper at Africa Cup of Nations finals behind Thom, Ernest Kakhobwe and William Thole.
At Eagles, Munthali will compete for places with John Soko and Chakonda Majanga.
Munthali joined Silver from Wizards in 2016.
