Silver Strikers aim to extend lead

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

TNM Super League leaders, Silver Strikers, can open a four-point gap at the top of the log table when hosting wounded Salima-based soldiers, Mafco, at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe this afternoon.

Silver top the standings with 23 points from 10 games whereas Mafco are bottom with seven points from the same number of games.

In the last 16 matches between the two sides in the league, Silver have won 11 matches, drawn once and lost four times.

The two sides have only shared the spoils once in 16 meetings, but Silver have netted 31 goals against Mafco’s 14.

Heading into the match, Silver have swagger, having ascended to the summit of the log table following a 2-1 victory over Karonga United last week whereas Mafco’s morale is low.

With second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets on bye as they are facing Blue Eagles in the Airtel Top 8 final tomorrow, victory for Silver will open a four-point gap but the Central Bankers would have played a game more.

Despite a dismal start to the season, Mafco are no pushovers. They can pull a surprise this afternoon.

The soldiers have done it before when they knocked out Silver in last year’s Fisd Challenge Cup with a 3-2 victory at the same venue.

Such statistics might send shock waves to Silver’s camp.

Silver Team Manager, Francis Songo, said his charges are targeting victory in this afternoon’s match.

“We know that Mafco are not doing well but we should be careful,” Songo said.

Silver have plenty of talent at their disposal. Gifted with goal-machine Mphatso Philimon, Jack Chiona and Victor Limbani can get the business done. Silver fans can expect goals this afternoon.

With just a single victory against Nchalo United in 10 games in the league, Mafco acting Coach, Tione Mhone, believes that his charges can turn the corner from today’s match.

“We are just going through a bad patch and this happens in football. We will get back to winning ways,” Mhone said.

To achieve his goal, Mhone should hope that his weapons, Joseph Dosah, Martin Masoatheka, Emmanuel Chipeta and Zikhole Ngulube will be at their best.

But Mafco have been finding it difficult to score with Ranken Mwale and Masoatheka shy in front of goal.

In other games this afternoon, Be Forward Wanderers face Nchalo at Mangochi Stadium whereas Azam Tigers host Mzuni FC at Mulanje Park Stadium this afternoon.

The Nomads are coming straight from a successful tour of the Central Region where they collected maximum points in two games.
