Silver Strikers, Civil Service United renew rivalry in Lilongwe derby

Capital City giants Silver Strikers and Civil Service United rekindle their rivalry when they clash in a Lilongwe derby at Silver Stadium this afternoon.

It will be a weird derby as for the first time it will be played behind closed doors due to restrictions on public gathering due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite the setback, the city will be divided at least for 90 minutes as points and bragging rights are at stake.

This is the match that always promises fireworks regardless of form of the two sides.

Heading into this afternoon’s match, Silver have a score to settle having lost the first-round fixture 2-1 at Civo Stadium. On the other hand, Civo will be looking for a double over their rivals this season.

But Silver are desperate for maximum points as they can return to top of the log table if they win today’s match.

Silver are second on the log table with 45 points from 21 matches, behind leaders Nyasa Big Bullets on goal difference.

Silver assistant Coach, Macdonald Mtetemera, knows the importance of the match and declared total war on their rivals.

“We have been waiting for this match and it has come at a good time. Everybody is in shape to play. At all cost, we are winning the match,” Mtetemera said.

On paper, Silver have the best squad compared to their rivals but Civo play as a unit like swarm of bees, building attack from the back.

Civo’s defence of Lawrence Chaziya, John Dambuleni, Willard Dickson and Damiano Kunje should keep a close eye on Stain Davie, Patrick Macheso, Duncan Nyoni and Blessings Tembo.

Civo Coach Franco Ndawa said history will repeat itself.

“We will continue from where we left off in the first round. At the end of the day, maximum points will be in our bag,” Ndawa said.

In-form striker Lanken Mwale, Moses Banda, Isaac Msiska and Fletcher Bandawe are potential match winners for Civo who are seventh on the log table with 33 points from 21 matches.

Silver contributed three players to the Flames at Cosafa Cup, namely; Mark Fodya, Nickson Mwase and Maxwell Phodo whereas Civo had Muhammad Sulumba.

Elsewhere, Chitipa United host Blue Eagles at Karonga Stadium whereas Red Lions will be in action against Ntopwa FC at Mpira Stadium.
