Silver Strikers, Civil Sporting Club to spice up Mini Olympic Games
Capital City giants, Silver Strikers and Civil Sporting Club, are scheduled to meet in a friendly match at Bingu National Stadium on October 14.
The match for the Lilongwe giants will be part of activities marking Mini Olympic Games.
Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) has organised the games in preparation for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia and 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.
Athletes in sporting disciplines such as tennis, judo, wrestling, weight-lifting, boxing and taekwondo will compete in the games.
Chairperson of the organising committee, Edgar Ng’ong’ola, who is also Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) General Secretary, confirmed the development.
“The two teams have confirmed their participation in the event. There will be many activities and we appeal to people to come and watch the activities,” Ng’ong’ola said.
The games would be used to select best athletes to represent Malawi during next year’s event in Australia.
Civil Vice General Secretary, Ronald Chiwaula, confirmed that they accepted to play against the Central Bankers.
“Moc approached us and we accepted because we do not have a league game on October 14. Although it is a friendly match, a game between Civil and Silver is always good,” Chiwaula said.
In a first-round league match, Silver defeated Civil 2-1 at Civo Stadium.
Moc introduced the games in 2013 and the first event was held at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe where over 100 athletes took part.
The games were introduced to improve the performances of athletes in the country.
