Silver Strikers complete Chawanangwa Kaonga deal

FDH Bank Cup finalists Silver Strikers have completed the signing of their former attacker Chawanangwa Kaonga on a two-year deal.

Silver Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali said they had signed Kaonga on recommendation from head coach Daniel Kabwe and his backroom staff.

“Chawa is a very good and experienced forward. We are happy that he did not hesitate to return to his boyhood club when the opportunity came. We want to build a very strong team capable of competing for trophies.

“We are not yet done on the transfer market. We are still ambitious and hungry for success. We want to beef up on areas that need reinforcement. We will sign some three more players but we will not disclose their identities for fear of competition from our rivals,” Chimbali said.

However, Chimbali could not clearly state if Kaonga will be available for selection when Silver take on Ekwendeni Hammers in their last TNM Super League match.

“We have now started registration processes with Football Association of Malawi. That is all I can say for now. We can never tell if he will be free to feature in our last league match of the season and the cup final against Ekwendeni Hammers. All I can say with certainty is that Kaonga is now our player,” he said.

Kaonga said he was happy to return home after spending about seven years outside the country.

“I will do my best to deliver on the pitch for the good of the club. Silver is my home and I am happy that I have been given the chance to revive my career here. It is an honour to be given the opportunity to play for the team I love and supported since I was very young. I will do everything to help make it very competitive,” he said.

Before returning to Area 47, Kaonga served a six-month Fifa ban for breach of contract. This followed his departure from Mozambican side UD Songo to TS Sporting of South Africa.

The 26-year-old Kaonga is an on-and-off Malawi National Football Team player and left Silver for Songo in 2014.
