Silver Strikers cry foul

VICTIMS?—Silver’s smashed bus

VICTIMS?—Silver’s lawyer Sibande

Silver Strikers have accused local football authorities of selective justice after being fined about K3.4 million.

Silver were found guilty of several charges including putting the game into disrepute and bullying opponents prior and during the FDH Bank quarterfinal match against Nyasa Big Bullets in August last year.

The team’s lawyer Chrispine Sibande said the club does not condone acts of violence.

“We feel that authorities quickly punish Silver but ignore cases where Silver is a victim.

“There is no justice and fairness. For example, Silver players and supporters were assaulted, beaten and had urine poured on them at Kamuzu Stadium on 30th July, 2021. Till now, April 2022, Sulom [Super League of Malawi] has refused to address the matter,” he said.

Sibande said Silver contacted both Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and Sulom through various platforms but nothing happened.

He also said the club was yet to get compensated after its bus was smashed by supporters suspected to be of Karonga United.

“You may also recall that Karonga United smashed and damaged our bus in Karonga through violence in the last season. Karonga United has refused to repair the bus up to now. They have not paid money, the equivalent of the repairs, as an alternative as ordered by Sulom,” he said.

Sibande said FDH Bank Cup winners had publicly apologised on the cases in which the club was found in the wrong.

“So the preliminary view is that Silver is a victim of selective justice. The team is a victim of football politics. We want authorities to seriously consider the consequences of selective justice as it erodes trust and sportsmanship,” he said.

Sulom President Tiya Somba-Banda referred Times Sport to the body’s lawyer Innocent Kadammanja, who could not be reached.

Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda could not be heard due to bad network.
