Crisis is looming at Silver Strikers as some fans have written the newly appointed board of directors not to endorse the new supporters’ committee.
The club appointed journalist Chisomo Mwamadi as its national coordinator following the abolishment of the supporters committee set-up.
However, some supporters have expressed concern over the composition of the new committee, claiming there are some strangers.
In a letter to the new board of directors, the supporters have threatened to form a parallel structure.
“The appointed committee comprises of all strangers to our football club. None of them are diehards of our team and their blood is not Silver Strikers. They have vested interests elsewhere,” the letter reads.
“It is a plot to paralyse and kill our team. It is our humble request to the board, therefore, to rescind the decision of appointing the supporters committee by the secretariat without our involvement and call for an indaba that will attract all supporters to elect a legitimate supporters committee that will have the mandate and the blessings of all of us.”
According to Nthala, his parallel grouping has more membership than the legitimate committee.
Two years ago, the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) dissolved the main executive committee as the club was registered as a company.
Following the development, the club established a fully-fledged secretariat and recruited permanent staff.
Silver Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali has the powers to appoint members of the supporters committee.
However, Chimbali was reluctant to comment on the matter.
“I will not be comfortable discussing the issue in the media,” he said.
However, Silver Company Secretary Peter Masiye admitted that the supporters had raised some serious concerns on the composition of the committee.
“The new board of directors is expected to meet soon and the issue will be discussed. We know the matter needs urgent attention,” Masiye said.
Mwamadi replaced Kingsley Malaya, who was the supporters’ committee chairperson for over five years.
In an interview Tuesday, Mwamadi said his committee had already hit the ground running.
“We have no time to waste. We want to help the club in its commercialisation drive and other activities. Those who are not happy should address their concerns to the appointing authority,” Mwamadi said.
Charles Kang’ombe was appointed as the supporters’ vice national coordinator whereas Kumbukani Kalomba and Gersom Banda were appointed general secretary and treasurer, respectively.
Other members in the new committee are Tia- Maria Katemba, Sphiwe Banda, Jaffali Chikwakwa, Noah Gilbert, Joshua Chinguwo (north), Francis Gutso (centre) and Zek Mdindo (south).
Silver won the FDH Bank Cup and finished as runners-up to Nyasa Big Bullets in both TNM Super League and Airtel Top 8 Cup.
