Silver Strikers hammer Red Lions

Silver Strikers turned in a vintage performance as they swept aside struggling Red Lions 4-1 in a TNM Super League match at Bingu National Stadium Sunday.

Striker Stain Davie and midfielder Chimwemwe Idana each scored twice for the Central Bankers before Davie Meja netted the consolation for the Lions.

The Zomba-based soldiers, straight from their 3-0 loss to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, turned up too ordinary.

Davie scored his first goal in the 11th minute from close range after connecting a cross from Mark Fodya.

Idana doubled the lead in the 43rd minute from the penalty spot after a Lions player handled the ball.

After the break, Idana completed his brace from close range before Davie nailed the last nail in the Lions’ coffin.

However, Meja scored the consolation goal towards the end of the match.

The win means Silver have moved to position three on the log table with seven points, at par with second-placed FCB Nyasa Bullets.

Both Silver and Bullets are two points behind Mighty Mukuru Wanderers after three matches. Bullets defeated rookies Extreme FC 1-0 away at Civo Stadium whereas Wanderers beat Ekwendeni Hammers on Saturday.

After the match, Silver Coach Pieter de Jongh said his troops played good football.

“We were better than our opponents. It was a good performance from the players. We had chances to score more goals,” the Dutchman said.

Lions Team Manager Malumbo Mkandawire said it was a bad day at the office.

“We conceded more goals but we failed to convert our chances,” he said.

Elsewhere, Civil Service United claimed their first win of the season after beating Mighty Tigers 1-0 at Mpira Stadium.

Muhammad Biason scored the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute to secure maximum points for Civil.

At Civo Stadium, Moyale Barracks got the better of Kamuzu Barracks 1-0 in an all military affair, thanks to Gastin Sinkonda’s goal from the penalty spot. For Moyale, it was their first win of the season whereas KB are yet to collect maximum points in three matches.

In Mulanje, Bangwe All stars and Blue Eagles shared points after a 1-1 draw. Chikumbutso Salima, who was voted Man of the Match, scored for Bangwe whereas Tonic Viyuyi netted for the Eagles.
