Silver Strikers itch for revenge

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

Capital City rivals Silver Strikers and Civil Sporting Club rekindle their rivalry in a Fisd Challenge Cup round of 16 match at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe this afternoon.

There is so much at stake whenever the two sides face each other. Apart from a place in the quarterfinals of the cup, Lilongwe City bragging rights are also at stake.

Silver have dominated the Lilongwe derby in the last three years but their honey moon came to an end when Civil won 2-1 in their last TNM Super League match.

Out of the two teams’ six previous meetings, Silver have won three games against their rivals’ single victory. Two games ended in stalemates.

Silver assistant Coach Peter Mgangira said the match is a must win for his side.

“We are facing a team which has a good technical panel and experienced players but the fact is that this is the last available trophy for us before the season ends. We need to get something for our supporters. Civil beat us in our last meeting, so we will go into the match to avenge defeat,’’ Mgangira said.

Civil Team Manager Gabriel Chirwa said his players are in high spirits ahead of the match.

Silver are a very good team but we will not give them too much respect on the pitch. We are also a big team and we have ambitions of winning,” Chirwa said.

Both sides have talent in abundance but such games are decided by special players. Ghanaian striker Michael Tetteh is becoming Silver’s poster boy after impressive performances since his return from a loan spell at Mzuni.

His partnership with Khuda Muyaba is proving to be dangerous.

At the back, Silver have Yinusa Sherrif, Trevor Kalema and Hebert Wayenkha whereas Thuso Paipi and Duncan Nyoni can cause plenty of problems to Civil defenders.

Without injured striker Raphael Phiri, Civil will keep their faith in Fletcher Bandawe, Innocent Tanganyika, Isaac Msiska and Christopher Kumwembe to keep Silver’ s defence busy.

Blessings Tembo could also be a handful against his former side with his pinpoint passes alongside Charles White who has established himself as Civil’ s kingpin.

In defence, Civil will rely on Lawrence Chaziya, Willard Dickson, Andrew Banda and Gomegzani Chirwa. In other round of 16 matches, Mafco host Chitipa United at Chitowe Stadium whereas Bloomfield meet Moyale Barracks at Mulanje Park. Airborne Rangers face Ipota Shooting Stars at Mzuzu Stadium.
