Silver Strikers linked with Gerald Phiri Snr, Elia Kananji

By Williams Gondwa:

Former Nyasa Big Bullets coaches Gerald Phiri Senior and Elia Kananji have been linked with Silver Strikers coaching jobs.

Silver General Secretary, Lawrence Yobe, Wednesday said Kananji and Phiri’s names were mentioned as a mere proposal.

“We are yet to meet as an Executive Committee and we also need to meet the board of directors so as to map the way forward,” Yobe said.

Under Lovemore Fazili and Young Chimodzi, Silver finished the 2018 season empty-handed.

Phiri, who last coached Malawi under-20 national football team in 2017, said Silver had not approached him.

“During the off-season, you hear many stories about players transferring from one club to another and this is also the case with coaches. But, as I indicated after parting ways with Fam [Football Association of Malawi], I went on a breather for a year. Now, I can take up any challenge,” Phiri said.

Kananji, who is also jobless after being fired at Bullets alongside Rodgers Yasini a few months ago, said he was not aware of Silver’s interest in him.

“I am just staying in Chilobwe Township [in Blantyre]. There is no team that has asked for my services. However, I have no doubt that I will secure a job,” Kananji said.

Meanwhile, Silver have extended left-back Mark Fodya’s contract by three more years.
