Silver Strikers meet Nomads in final

Silver Strikers will meet Be Forward Wanderers in the final of Airtel Top 8 Cup after beating Kamuzu Barracks (KB) 5-4 on post-match penalties at Civo Stadium Sunday.

Wanderers and Silver, whose traditional colours are blue, also met in Carlsberg Cup final last season with the Nomads winning on post-match penalties.

Yesterday, exciting winger Thuso Paipi scored the decisive penalty to send Silver into the final scheduled for Saturday.

Young Chimodzi Jnr, Chisomo Mpachika, Blessings Tembo and Green Harawa netted penalties for Silver whereas Mustafa Salimu missed his spot kick for KB but Sammy Chiponda, Pilirani Makupe, Pempho Kamsichili converted their penalties.

The game had ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Both teams played ping-pong football in the first-half. Silver scored through Matthew Sibale’s free header after 22 minutes.

The Central Bankers held on to their slender lead until recess.

After break, KB introduced Diof Simaone for Ndaona Ndaisi, who had a bad day.

Simaone made an instant impact with his inviting crosses.

Finally, the soldiers grabbed an equaliser through Dan Ziba from the penalty spot midway through the second-half after Mpachika’s handball.

The goal energised the soldiers who pressed for a winner but it never came.

And KB were dealt a big blow when another forward Manase Chiyesa was stretchered off midway in the first-half.

In a post-match interview, KB Head Coach, Billy Phambala, said penalties were lotteries.

“My players did well but Silver got that luck to win the game through the penalties,” Phambala said.

His opposite number, Lovemore Fazili, said he was focusing on seeking revenge against Wanderers in the final.

“It was a tough game but credit should go to the players for playing according to instructions. We are now facing Wanderers but they should not underrate us because we want this cup more than them,” Fazili said.
