Silver Strikers nominate ex-general secretary for Sulom polls
By Mabvuto Kambuwe:
As Super League of Malawi (Sulom) goes to the polls on March 2, Silver Strikers have nominated their former general secretary (GS) Mike Tembo for the position of the TNM Super League governing body’s GS.
Tembo lost to incumbent Sulom GS Williams Banda during the 2014 elections in Salima. Following his nomination, Tembo will compete against Banda again if the incumbent seeks re-election.
Silver General Secretary, Lawrence Yobe, said Tembo’s name has been submitted to Sulom. “He is the only one who has approached us so far, so we submitted his name to Sulom. We will see what will happen in the next few days. In addition, the candidates will have time to campaign so we will make a final decision before the polls,” Yobe said.
Tembo said he is interested in contesting as Sulom GS.
“I am capable of bringing change. I want to apply marketing ideas to bring in other sponsors to boost income for clubs. I have run football at club level and I understand the problems that are there.
Advertisement“I will mainly aim at marketing our football for better packages to clubs at different categories. I will work on direct sponsorship to clubs both during the league season and at the end,” Tembo said.
Sulom released a statement last week notifying teams about the polls at an annual general meeting scheduled for a venue yet to be announced.
The league’s governing body also asked clubs to nominate candidates of their choice ahead of the polls.
Civil Sporting Club General Secretary, Ronald Chiwaula, said the club is yet to nominate people.
“Several people have expressed interest in contesting for different positions during the elections. We are still discussing some of the names but some people have approached us asking to be names. We hope to submit nominations by the end of this week,” Chiwaula said.
Sulom President, Innocent Botomani, already indicated that he would not seek re-election.
The body’s Treasurer, Tiya Somba-Banda, has expressed interest in contesting for Botomani’s position whereas Gilbert Mitawa is vying for the position of vice president which is s vacant after Daud Suleman was elected Football Association of Malawi executive committee member.
Masters Security duo of Zachariah Nyirenda and Muhammad Selemani is vying for the positions of vice general secretary and legal advisor, respectively.
Godfrey Makawano, Charles Manyungwa and Willy Josaya have expressed interest in contesting as committee members.
