Four Silver Strikers players have tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of training resumption slated for October 17.

They are defenders Trevor Kalema and Horace Mchoma, and midfielders Chikondi Kamanga and Patrick Macheso.

A press release published on Silver’s website Wednesday stated that the players were in self-isolation.

The club’s Chief Executive Officer Thoko Chimbali said despite testing positive, the players were asymptomatic.

Chimbali said 43 club members went through the exercise and that another test would take place a few days to training resumption.

“We have decided to have the tests earlier in order to manage the positive cases in time for the resumption of training. We thought it wise to start with Covid-19 tests as the rest of the medical tests hinge on the status of the players in relation to Covid-19,” he said.

Silver are the first club to test players and technical staff ahead of the training restart.

Football Association of Malawi Special Task Force on Covid-19 Chairperson, Chimango Munthali, applauded Silver for the initiative.

“There are several protocols that clubs will follow before resuming training. The first step is to know individuals’ status and find ways of managing the situation,” Munthali said.

The Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 last week sanctioned the resumption of training for elite clubs but with strict guidelines.

Football analyst George Kaudza-Masina said the results were encouraging.

“I think we are moving in the right direction in the fight against the pandemic. Silver have taken a good step and I urge other clubs to have their players tested. This is important as they prepare to start training,’’ Kaudza-Masina said.

Last week, two Flames players and two officials tested positive for coronavirus.

Defender Hadji Wali and goalkeepers trainer Swadick Sanudi have since returned to camp training after testing negative in the second test.

However, goalkeeper Rabson Chiyenda is still in isolation after failing the second test.
