Silver Strikers recruit under-23 keeper
By Mabvuto Kambuwe:
Capital City giants Silver Strikers have signed Dwangwa United and Malawi under-23 national football team goalkeeper Charles Thom on a three-year deal.
He becomes Silver’s second signing in the ongoing transfer window after midfielder Sherrif Shamama, who joined from Karonga United.
Silver General Secretary (GS), Lawrence Yobe, said they were not yet done on the transfer market.
“He is a good acquisition for us as we want to build a strong squad ahead of the season. We are likely to sign more players before the end of this month,” said Yobe, whose side finished empty-handed last season.
At Silver, Thom will compete for a starting place with Brighton Munthali and Steven Micheta. Silver released goalkeeper Blessings Kameza due to disciplinary issues.
Silver goalkeepers trainer, Sibusiso Padambo, said Thom would bring competition to the goalkeeping department.
“Our first-choice goalkeeper is sometimes committed with national team engagements, so we decided to bring another top class goalkeeper so that we should have backup,” Padambo said.
Meanwhile, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has announced that the players transfer window closes on April 11 2019, three days before the kick-off of the 2019 season.
Sulom GS, Williams Banda, said clubs have until April 30 2019 to register a maximum of 30 players each.
Banda could not disclose the number of transfers that have been completed so far.
In the ongoing transfer window, Be Forward Wanderers, Nyasa Big Bullets and Civil Sporting Club have been the busiest.
The Nomads have signed striker Babatunde Adepoju, Francis Mkonda from Masters Security and striker Peter Kasonga from Tigers whereas Bullets have roped in defenders Precious Sambani (Namiwawa FC ), Gomezgani Chirwa (Civil), Ben Manyozo (Dwangwa United) and Luke Chima from Tigers.
Wanderers GS, Mike Butao, said they have signed most of the targets.
“We feel that we have done a good job on the market but just watch the space, something might happen,” Butao said.
Civil have signed defender Emmanuel Zoya from Bullets, Dan Kumwenda (Tigers), Blessings Kameza, Damiano Kunje and Timothy Chitedze from Silver.
Civil GS, Ronald Chiwaula, said they expect to name their final squad later this week.
“We had a successful meeting with the technical panel on the final squad. We will release names of members of the squad by the end of the week,” Chiwaula said.
