Silver Strikers seek Lilongwe derby revenge

Silver Strikers seek a return to winning ways and revenge when they face hosts Civo United in the pontentially-mouth watering Lilongwe derby Saturday.

The Central Bankers go into the match straight from a 0-1 loss to Mafco last week. Silver also want to avenge the 0-2 home defeat to Civo in the first round.

Civo are coming from a one-all -draw against Epac on Sunday.

In today’s fixture, there is battle for supremacy in the city.

Ironically, Civo chalked their first win of the season when they defeated Silver after going eight games without a win.

In recent years, the Lilongwe derby has lost its sparkle due to Silver’s dominance. This was the case until this year when Civo turned the tables.

Today’s game promises to be thrilling as both teams are yearning for a win.

The two sides are separated by five points on the log table, with Silver lying third on 32 points from 19 games whereas Civo are eighth with 27 points from 20 games.

Silver assistant coach, Lovemore Fazili, knows the importance of the game as they are looking for maximum points to pile pressure on leaders, Big Bullets, whose invincibility came to an end last week.

For the first time this season in 18 games, Bullets lost 2-1 to Airborne Rangers at Chitowe Stadium on Sunday.

“It would be a tough match as usual but we need a win to boost the confidence of the players. Civo are in top form at the moment and we need to be on top of our game to beat them and increase our chances of winning the championship,” Fazili said.

Silver chances of winning the league are slim. The Bankers have maximum 59 points if they win all their remaining games, whereas Bullets have maximum of 71 points.

Second-placed Mafco have maximum of 58 points, whereas other contenders, Blue Eagles and Red Lions have a maximum of 60 points each.

Buoyed by their impressive cup campaign this season, Civo coach, Oscar Kaunda said his charges will not be complacent because they want back-to-back victories over Silver this season.

“We are prepared to continue from where we left in the first round.

They would come for revenge, but we have a plan to contain them,” said Kaunda on Wednesday.

Gerald Nkungula, Raphael Phiri, John Lanjesi and Emanuel Zoya are potential match winners for Civo, whereas Peter Wadabwa, Green Harawa, Victor Limbani and Lucky Malata carry Silver’s hopes.
