Silver Strikers seek to break Carlsberg Cup jinx

Carlsberg Cup holders, Big Bullets, face an enormous task when they host Silver Strikers in what promises to be a nail-biting semi-final at the Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

The fixture comes just seven days after the two teams faced-off in the Intercity Soccer Fiesta in Lilongwe. Bullets triumphed 1-0, but last week’s result could prove irrelevant today.

This match promises to be a thriller as both teams have different missions. Bullets are defending champions while Silver, who have never won the Carlsberg Cup, are aiming for their first appearance in the K30 million cup final.

Silver coach, Stanley Chirwa, will look to get a better result for the first time this season against Bullets after they were also beaten 2-1 in a league match.

Despite a below-par performance during the Intercity Soccer Fiesta, Chirwa has declared total war on Bullets today.

“We anticipate a tough encounter against Bullets, but we are ready for them. Our aim is to reach the final and probably win the cup for first time in the history of the club,” Chirwa said.

This season, Silver have been fragile in defence and midfield, whereas their striking force has been unpredictable.

Lucky Malata, Green Harawa, Peter Wadabwa and Victor Limbani are carrying Silver’s hopes in this encounter. Ndaziona Chatsalira has also passed a fitness test and would likely play.

On the other hand, Bullets are also coming from unconvincing performance in Lilongwe where their defending problems were also exposed when they drew 3-3 against Blue Eagles.

Bullets’ technical director, Billy Tewesa, said: “Although cup games are difficult, we have prepared well. We know that Silver will come hard on us, but we can contain them.”

With striker Chiukepo Msowoya doubtful, Bullets pin hopes on Dalitso Sailesi, Jaffalie Chande and Fischer Kondowe. Goalkeeper Vincent Gona has been ruled out, but Sankhani Mkandawire could feature.

In another semi-final match, Be Forward Wanderers face Moyale Barracks tomorrow at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.
