Silver’s Strikers title hopes falter
Silver Strikers’ hopes of winning the TNM Super League title suffered another blow Sunday following a one-all draw against Mzuni FC at Mzuzu Stadium.
The Central Bankers needed maximum points to move one point behind second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets.
Silver have 51 points from 26 games, three points behind Bullets and seven adrift of leaders, Be Forward Wanderers. Bullets and the Nomads have played 25 games each. Mzuni remain 10th with 31 points.
During the game, the two sides settled quickly, but the first-half failed to produce any goal.
Things started going wrong for the visitors after the final whistle of the first-half as goalkeeper Brighton Munthali was sent off for insulting referee, Misheck Juwa.
But Mzuni failed to make their numerical advantage count. Silver took the lead in the 67th minute through Matthews Sibale, who coolly slotted past Chimwemwe Kumkwawa in Mzuni goal.
But as the 10-man Bankers were edging closer to the much-needed win, substitute Henry Misinjo equalised for Mzuni.
Silvers Team Manager, Francis Songo, said the draw has not done his team any good.
“[This is] not the result we wanted. The problem has been the same… too many draws. Again today, we fought to close the gap from Bullets, but another draw today has not done us any good.
