Simama league top scorer targets 50 goals

Chitipa United red-hot striker, Abel Mwakilama, has vowed to continue with his goal scoring form until he achieves his target of 50 goals by the end of the season.

The 19-year-old is the current top goal scorer in the Simama Northern Region Football Association league with 26 goals in 23 matches.

With 15 games remaining to wrap up the season, the teenage forward believes he will continue to find the back of the net.

Mwakilama, who is reported to have been approached by some ‘big’ clubs, attributed his dazzling form to intensive training.

“I have only one secret—I train a lot. I am not yet there but with hard work I believe I will achieve more. All I want is to score a total of 50 goals this season,” he said.

Mwakilama scored a hat-trick last Saturday in his side’s 3-1 victory over Nkhorongo to extend their lead.

Meanwhile, Chitipa United General Secretary, Marshall Mwenechanya, has described the wonderkid as a ‘man from another planet’.

“Abel is extremely talented. Simply put, he is not from this planet. Every game he plays, he makes sure he scores at least a goal or two. On his best day, he scores three or four times,” explained Mwenechanya.

He said Mwakilama has been the chief engineer of his side’s good run in the league.

Asked if the team will be able to keep Mwakilama should they get promoted to the Super League, Mwenechanya disclosed that the teenager has turned down offers from some Super League teams before.

“We could have lost him to some big clubs long ago, but he is committed to finishing the season with us. And we are happy as a club that he is in top form,” he said.

While declining to name the teams that had asked for Mwakilama’s services, the general secretary said his team was doing all it can to help the striker maintain his form until they make it to the Super League.

Chitipa, who play 17th-placed Omega this Saturday, lead the 20- team league with 54 points from 23 games.
