Simba Ladies Hockey side suffered comprehensive defeats to Zambian teams over the weekend at Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka.
On Saturday, Simba were thoroughly baptised by the Sharks after losing 20-0 then 10-1 to Zambia Select Under-18 side.
Simba finished their tour on Sunday in similar fashion. Simba also lost to Zambia Under-18 by 10-1 before going down 14-0 to Sharks.
The team’s Captain, Trinity Chilembwe, admitted that the standards of hockey were high in Zambia.
“They [Zambian teams] play beautiful hockey. You have to appreciate good things when you see them,” she said.
Chilembwe said they were not discouraged by the comprehensive defeats.
“When coming here, we knew that these ladies were more advanced than us. But you can’t grow if you keep playing people who are on the same level with you. Playing with Sharks Ladies and the Zambian under-18 has shown us that we, in Malawi, especially the women, play mediocre hockey.
“These guys are brilliant; the way they move the ball, you find yourself watching instead of playing. We had fun playing with them regardless of the goals that they kept scoring,” she said.
Last year, Simba also travelled to Zimbabwe during the team’s maiden international trip where they suffered four defeats and drew once.
