Simba SC lose friendly

Nyasa Big Bullets’ Caf Champions League preliminary round opponents Simba SC of Tanzania suffered a 1-0 loss to Sudanese giants Al Hilal in a friendly on Wednesday.

Bullets host Simba in the first leg at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe next week before the second leg a week later.

While Bullets are contented with their local preparations, Simba are leaving no stone unturned ahead of the first leg.

The East African side has played two friendlies as part of its preparations.

Former Bullets attacking midfielder Peter Banda started the Al Hilal match for Simba alongside Senegal’s Pape Ousmane Sakho.

Simba have beefed up their squad for the continent’s elite club competition with Serbian striker Dejan Georgijevic while Bullets have not made any additions.

Bullets have assembled a good squad blending youthful and experienced players such as Patrick Mwaungulu, Babatunde Adepoju, Lanjesi Nkhoma and John Lanjesi.

Sports analyst and former Malawi National Football Team star Peterkins Kayira said Bullets should not read too much into the result.

“I am sure Simba will manage to rectify some of their problems before they meet Bullets. We should also bear in mind the fact that they lost to a good side which has so much experience in the Caf Champions League. So Bullets should exercise caution,” Kayira said.

The winner between Simba and Bullets will face the victorious side between Red Arrows of Zambia and Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto.

Bullets have failed to go past the first preliminary round of the competition since 2015.

In 2019, they exited the competition following a 3-2 loss on aggregate to FC Platinum of Zimbabwe.

It was a similar story in last year’s competition when South Africa’s AmaZulu booted them out by the same margin despite winning the first leg 1-0 in Durban, South Africa.
