The race for the 2022 Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) K10 million Simama and Sons (Simso) Innobuild Premier League is getting tougher with three teams tied on 14 points apiece after playing eight games.

The three are Nkhata Bay-based Kadona Stars, former TNM Super League side Chitipa United and Mzimba United.

Chitipa reclaimed top position on the log table with a goal difference of six on Tuesday following a 1-1 draw with Baka City at Karonga Stadium.

aThe second round of the eight-member league kicked off last weekend and is expected to end next month.

Chitipa Team Manager Watson Kabaghe described the league as competitive.

“We may be leading on the log table but the going is quite tough. We are fully aware of the fact that winning will not come on a silver platter. We therefore have to engage the extra gear to win all our remaining six games.

“Our ultimate goal is to bounce back in the TNM Super League. The competition among teams is quite stiff and we need to be at our best if we are to achieve our goals. We may be leading yes but we are making life difficult for ourselves because of unnecessary draws which can end up costing us dearly. Our target is to win all the remaining fixtures so that we win the regional title,” Kabaghe said.

Kadona coach Luka ‘Bruno’ Milanzi said they are also fighting for the championship despite being newcomers.

“At first we came to just participate but after realising that the giants are giving us a lot of respect, we have a feeling that winning the title is possible. We believe that if the status quo remains, earning Super League promotion is possible. We want to become champions in our first season and remain optimistic,” Milanzi said.

NRFA General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu has since cautioned teams that any acts of indiscipline will be punished.

“We do not want to hear of any incidents as we go into the second round. Our goal is to finish the season in time so that our champions have ample time to prepare for life in the Super League. Those are our plans,” Nyasulu said.

Baka are on fourth position with 12 points while Ekwendeni United anchor the table with five points from eight games.
