Six boxers have been picked to represent the Northern Region at the Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) national tournament.
The two-day competition will take place at Riverside Motel in Salima District from May 29, according to Maba Professional Boxing Committee Chairperson, Daudi Chikwanje.
The boxers have been picked following their impressive displays during the Northern Region boxing bonanza held in Mzuzu on Sunday.
Wakisa Ng’ambi, Steven Mwase and Friday Mkandawire have all made it into the amateurs’ category, whereas Secret Chirwa, Macdad Thipa will join seeded Malani Kayuni in the professional ranks.
The amateur boxers received a pair of boxing shorts each.
Meanwhile, the Northern Region Boxing Committee (NRBC) Vice Chairperson, Happy Kumwenda, believes the boxers are capable of bringing honours from the national event.
“We will have a strong representation—no question about it. We have selected a team that is absolutely talented,” he said.
“The best they can do is to start training now. Most boxers start preparations a week before going into the ring. And that is the reason why most boxers fail to impress in such tournaments.”
The bonanza was spiced up by a fight involving Lilongwe-based veteran boxer Philemon Nkhakamira Banda and Malani Kayuni.
Kayuni won on points in the eight-round contest.
