Super League of Malawi (Sulom) vice president Daud Suleman is set to be elected as a Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Executive Committee member with six affiliates favouring him for the post.
Fam will hold elections in January to identify a replacement for Gift Gunda whose executive member position fell vacant after his appointment as the association’s General Secretary.
Gunda took up the post on December 1 to fill the shoes of Suzgo Nyirenda who joined the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) secretariat as Deputy Chief Executive Officer.
Suleman confirmed the move, saying he was approached by several Fam affiliates to vie for the post.
“I want to continue serving football under the current leadership. It will be an honour to get elected and work with the current Fam president in developing football across the country,” Suleman said.
He explained that he will be driven by Fam’s strategic plan in contributing to the development of football at all levels.
Suleman said he had learnt a lot during his time at Sulom and believes that his move to Fam will enable him to become a better administrator.
“You may wish to know that I first discussed this with Sulom President Innocent Botoman , General Secretary Williams Banda and his deputy Thoko Chazema. I am contesting for this position with their blessings. As you know, they are like my parents,” he said.
Suleman has been nominated for the post by the National Youth Football Association (NYFA), Northen Region Football Association (NRFA), Southern Region Football Association (SRFA), Beach Soccer and National Womens Football Association in addition to Sulom.
NYFA President Chimango Munthali and Sulom Vice General Secretary Thoko Chazema confirmed nominating Suleman for the post.
Chazema said Suleman approached them about his intention to contest for the position.
“He is one of our own. So we are more than happy to send him to Fam. He has our blessings. We will give him full support,” said Chazema.
The polls will take place on January 14 at Capital Sunbird Hotel in Lilongwe.
Coaches, referees and Central Region Football Association are the three remaining affiliates whose nominations are yet to be known.
