The body of the late Usumani Imedi, a police officer who was stoned to death by protesters at Msundwe, Lilongwe on Tuesday, was laid to rest at his home Village Mawuni, Traditional Authority (T/A) Makanjira, Mangochi District Wednesday.
The mood was gloomy in the whole village as women and men wept when a police vehicle carrying the remains of the late Imedi arrived.
“This is a painful death because we do not expect people to die while protecting others. This death will be hard for us to forget because it was people such as Imedi who were role models for our children,” Makanjira said after the burial.
Eastern Region Police spokesperson, Joseph Sauka, said they feel sad to have lost one of their own.
“We might differ on other issues with members of the community but our duty shall remain to protect the communities we operate in,” he said.
