The National Association for Small and Medium Entreprise (Nasme) has urged Malawians to support the Buy Malawi campaign which is being championed by the government.

Nasme chairperson William Mwale said this during the opening of a week-long SME trade exhibition which is under way at the trade fair grounds in Blantyre.

Mwale said Malawians should reduce their appetite for foreign products and start supporting locally produced items.

“Malawians have a responsibility to promote the local industry,” he said.

He said when purchasing foreign goods, consumers export local jobs.

“It is the foreign companies and countries that are benefiting. If we buy foreign goods it means the jobs that could have been taken up by local Malawians are exported to foreign countries,” said Mwale.

He said the government is supporting SMEs, especially in the attainment of value addition.
