DONE DEAL—Nkunika (left) presents dummy cheque to Nyamilandu

By Isaac Salima:

It does not get better than this! That was what could be heard from most Football Association of Malawi (Fam) officials at Mpira Village, Chiwembe Township, Blantyre Thursday when FDH Bank unveiled a five-year sponsorship of FDH Cup pegged at K90 million per season.

The mood inside Sydney Chikafa Conference Room was jovial as journalists from different media houses, national team coaches and officials, who attended the ceremony, celebrated another historical moment for Malawi football.

As FDH Bank Head of Marketing and Communication, Levie Nkunika, rose from his seat to announce the sponsorship, many expected ordinary football sponsorship news.

However, Nkunika announced that the cup’s champions would be getting an unprecedented K25 million.

The amount surpasses K20 million prize money for Fisd Challenge Cup winners whereas TNM Super League kings earn K15 million.

The new cup will involve 62 district regional teams who will later be joined by 16 Super League sides at the national phase.

Nkunika said their sponsorship shows that they have strong belief in local teams.

“No any bank has ever done this. We have local players who are hard-working and deserve better. It is for this reason that we decided to come and give them what they deserve. Our customers love football and through this sponsorship, we will be part of their life,” Nkunika said.

The Malawi national football team sponsors, FDH, also announced that they would maintain their K60 million annual sponsorship to the Flames.

Fam president, Walter Nyamilandu, was visibly excited with the good news.

“We have always wanted our players to get the best and we are happy that we have opened a new chapter, as we have now set the bars high. Since the competition will extend to the districts, this makes it a national appeal,” Nyamilandu said.

Runner up will be getting K8 million with semi-finalists receiving K2 million each. Regional champions will be pocketing K500,000 and two match balls each.

There will also be individual and media awards.

The cup will be played from May to September from next year and will run concurrently with the Super League.
