Social media attacks worry Nam

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) President, Khungekile Matiya, has said the body fears for the reputation of the sport in the country which could be ruined following negative attacks on the social media.
Matiya was reacting to concerns which Malawi National Council of Sports raised after some pictures showing some Queens players eating under a tree circulated on the social media.
The incident happened barely hours after the Queens defeated Zimbabwe 71-46 to settle for silver medals at the just ended Africa Netball Championship in Cape Town, South Africa.
“We know some people have hidden agenda. They want to damage the reputation of the netball in general and association [Nam] in particular. People should be responsible before sending unverified information on social media,” the Nam boss said.
Matiya said they had identified some culprits that were responsible of circulating negative information and pictures.
“We want to get to the bottom of it. The players were paid their allowances but like I said those people have hidden agenda. So we want to get to the bottom of it. Luckily we now know who was taking the pictures and who circulated them,” she said.
Sports Council Acting Executive Secretary, Henry Mereka, has also urged the association to address the situation as reports suggest that some quarters use such incidents to bogusly fundraise for the Queens.
“The issue must be investigated thoroughly to determine the intentions of those that circulate false news. There are fears that some use such incidents to fundraise on behalf of the Queens but they do not remit the funds,” he said.
