Soldier to receive Urban Music People Lifetime Award

LUCIUS—We want to give people a treat

Soldier Lucius Banda is this year’s Urban Music People (UMP) Lifetime Achiever recipient, the organisers have revealed.

The ‘Mabala’ hitmaker will receive the award during UMP awards ceremony which will be held next month.


The award according to the organisers is given to individuals who have contributed in a major way to the development of Malawi music industry including urban music.

Mphatso Chibota, UMP Events Coordinator said:

“Lucius Banda was carefully chosen after comprehensive analysis by a panel of local music experts,” Chibota said.


He described the legendary artist as an epitome of music celebrity in the country and probably the biggest musical act Malawi has ever produced.

“We at UMP are excited that Lucius is this year’s recipient. He has already done a lot to fulfill his legacy as probably the biggest musical act to emerge from Malawi, an inspiration to multiple generations of artists, transcending genres,” Chibota said.

The previous winners of the award include, Tapps Bandawe in 2017, Oscar Thomson in 2016, the Late Mafunyeta & Criminal A in 2015, Vic Marley & Black Life Entertainment in 2013, Dynamike and the late Faith Chibale in 2010.

Meanwhile, UMP has also announced that the categories in this year’s awards have been increased from 17 to 20.

The categories in this year’s edition are Artist of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Music Video Director of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Collaboration of the Year, Best New Artist/Group, Best Female Artist, Producer of the Year, Best Urban Gospel Artist/Group, Best Hip- Hop Artist/Group, Best Dancehall Artist/Group, Best RnB/Afro pop Artist/Group, Best Band, Best Duo, Best Sadc International Act, Lifetime Achievement, Best AfroSoul Artist/Group, Humanitarian Award and Best Live Act.

The organisers have since said the nominations for the awards will open soon.

UMP has also announced a roster of artists who will headline the awards and they include Purple C.

Other names on the list include Ghetto Gutter Entertainment artists Temwa and Episodz, Toast, Salima Dancers, gospel sensational artist, Shammah Vocals and young star Eli Njuchi.

In addition, UMP has announced the prices for the red carpet event with K3,000 for standard and K10,000 for VIP.

The ceremony will be held on December 29 2018 at Robins Park Blantyre.
