Moyale Barracks soldiers on Friday combined forces with civilians by holding a 12km big walk to promote the forthcoming Mzuzu City Half Marathon set for March 5.

The organising committee organised the 12km walk as a way of coaxing the community to register for the 21km race.

Moyale Barracks Commanding Officer Lt Colonel Thokozani Chazema, speaking after the big walk from Mzuzu University to Mzuzu Stadium, said, as partners in the forthcoming event, they felt obliged to support the initiative to promote the race.

“We, as Moyale Barracks, feel we have a duty to play in all activities that will help Malawi National Council of Sports stage a successful event. We had to join the big walk to show our commitment towards the forthcoming event,” Chazema said.

Northern Region Sports Development Officer Grecian Mkandawire hailed the soldiers for spicing up the awareness campaign.

“Their presence alone made people join the walk, in so doing we achieved our goal, which was to inform people about the half marathon. We are impressed with the gesture shown by Moyale Barracks,” Mkandawire said.

He asked well-wishers and the corporate world to support the upcoming half marathon.

“It is my call to well-wishers and the corporate world to come and sponsor the event,” Mkandawire said.

On his part, Mzuzu City resident Reverend Reuben Matundu, who participated in the activity, said the event was colourful.

Mzuzu City Council and Moyale Barracks have partnered Malawi National Council of sports in organising the marathon in Mzuzu.
