LOW TURNOUT— Lucius performs

Soldier Lucius Banda and his Zembani Band on Sunday performed at Pa Zinziri in Chileka, Blantyre.

The show came barely a day after Lucius and the band performed at Limbe Country Club on New Year’s Day in Blantyre.

There were showers throughout the night, but some music-lovers braved the showers to enjoy music from Lucius and members of his Zembani Band.

Before Lucius jumped to the stage, some of the artists that warmed for him included his son Johnny, Sam Smack and Mr Friday.

Smack also had time to collaborate with Lucius in a reggae medley which he did with Patience Namadingo and another track, in which he collaborated with Janta.

“Last year, I did a number of collaborations and it was exciting to work with all the artists to give people something different,” he said.

Lucius performed for some time before paving the way for Nepman close to midnight.

He was happy with the turn of events.

“All the three shows we had were good. We were supported,” he said.

He described 2020 as a worst year, when artists suffered a lot due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The year 2021 might continue with the challenges of 2020 but, this time, at least people will be ready— unlike last year, when Covid-19 took us by surprise. We are just praying that the pandemic should go away and that there should be an improvement,” Lucius said.

He also said they would be introducing more expensive shows this year.

“It’s hard but it’s working. For instance, there was a show we held on December 26, where a lot people came and paid K10,000 at the door. On Valentine’s Day, we might look at that. With less people patronising shows due to Covid-19, we have to look into this. We also have to be clever on sales and see where we can tap; otherwise, we are set as Zembani,” Lucius said.

Meanwhile, Lucius has said two youngsters – his son Johnny Mr Zembani and his adopted son Mr Friday— will be releasing their debut singles this month.

“Now is the time for them to come out and release their own music. Mr Friday has been with Zembani for 11 years. We have been mentoring him and the same applies to Zembani. They are all ready,” he said.
