Blantyre-based Solomonic Peacocks announced recently that they will not hold the annual Easter Theatre Festival due to financial problems.

But despite this setback, the theatre group will still continue to host different activities as well as stage plays in the year 2016 starting off with Mchezo Wa Chikondi on Valentine’s Day at Blantyre Cultural Centre.

Mchezo Wa Chikondi is not a play as others might think but it is an event that will bring together several activities with the theme bordering on love – with February 14 being Valentine’s Day.

“As Solomonic Peacocks we thought of bringing people together and celebrate love. This is a special time and we are calling upon people to come as this is the only love event that will bring lovers together and those who don’t have lovers this is their opportunity,” said Solomonic Peacocks Director McArthur Matukuta.

He said people will be treated to a dish of activities during the event including poetry, stand-up comedy and traditional dances.

Matukuta also said that Solomonic Peacocks will stage a short production titled The Four Lettered Word.

“This is a short play, we do not want to pre-empt everything here but let people come and watch this production. It’s a play with a collection of ideas but I am the one who has directed it,” said the former National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) president.

Some of the artists set to light up Mchezo Wa Chikondi on the day include Madalitso Nyambo, Pastor Junior, Sylvester Kalizang’oma, Hudson Chamasowa, Joseph Madzedze, Luckier Chikopa and presidential mimickers Atcheya, Mr Malawi and Aunt Geti.

“As we have said this is all about love and so the artists will do their activities focusing on love,” said Matukuta.
