Somizi Mhlongo, a popular South African choreographer and radio personality, will host this year’s Nyasa Music Awards to be held at Comesa Hall in Blantyre on May 4.

Somizi has appeared in various television shows, such as Living the Dream with Somizi, I am and Idols SA.

One of the brains behind the awards, James Makunje Jnr, confirmed the development yesterday.

The news about Somizi has attracted mixed views once again, just as the nomination list, as some Malawians have demanded to know why Malawian awards were being hosted by a South African.

Makunje Jnr said their decision to pick Somizi was based on the fact that he is a great entertainer and that he knows how to keep the crowd interested in something.

“That he is also an Idols judge was another big factor for us. This is a music awards show and the fact that he is an Idols judge carries a lot of weight and we don’t know the exposure or opportunity that some of our artists can get through this platform,” he said.

Makunje Jnr said they were trying to unite the continent and do away with stigma.

“We could have easily picked an international act to come and perform but we wanted to keep the performances for our home grown artists. People must not be close minded. This is a new world; we need to learn to grow and develop as a nation,” Makunje Jr said.

He said award shows across the world are hosted by people from different countries.

“We have a Malawian host as well who will be revealed in due course,” Makunje Jnr said.

Several artists have been nominated in over 20 categories which, of themselves, have attracted mixed reaction.

Some of the artists that have been nominated include Bossaro Music Group, Piksy, Lucius Banda, Lulu Sonye, Saint, Zathu Band, Tay Grin, Fredokiss, Gwamba, Lawi, Patience Namadingo and Sonyezo.
