Sosten Gwengwe, others back to MCP

Former president Joyce Banda’s running mate in the 2014 elections, Sosten Gwengwe has rejoined the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Gwengwe was welcomed back to the party, alongside other two former senior members of former ruling People’s Party (PP) George Zulu and Abel Kayembe.

Speaking at Kamwendo Trading Centre during a rally addressed by MCP president Lazarus Chakwera yesterday, Zulu, a former Deputy Secretary General of PP, said he was going to the MCP to strengthen it.

“We are back to work with you in strengthening the party. You are very conversant with the parable of a prodigal son. Treat us as prodigal sons,” Zulu said.

Gwengwe, who spoke by public demand, revealed how he almost quit politics.

“Soon after last year’s elections, I wanted to quit politics. But I had almost 11,000 people that followed me out of MCP. I couldn’t tell them to go back to the party when I’m out of politics. The only logical thing was to lead them in coming back to this party,” he said.

The party also welcomed another former PP official Agnes Nkusa Nkhoma into the party.

Chakwera officially welcomed the members back to the party.

“I’m extremely happy that they are coming back and you have heard them say why they are coming back to MCP. MCP is bringing hope and seems to be an answer to the seeming quagmire we are involved in now,” Chakwera said.

In his speech, Chakwera said declarations by some individuals that they have already won 2019 elections is a sign that the individuals have already rigged elections.

His remarks come days after President Peter Mutharika said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will win 2019 elections.

“There are some people who are saying they will win 2019 elections. That shows they want to do what they did with last (2014) elections. In democracy that’s not right,” Chakwera said .
