South Africa-based Malawian eyes Ultra Marathon
By Mphatso Malidadi:

South Africa-based Malawian athlete Jimmy Bonjesi has stepped up preparations for this year’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon after finishing on position 10 out of 2,765 athletes during the Cape Peninsula Marathon in South Africa.
Bonjesi clocked 2:40:40 during the race on February 17.
Mthangayi Lindikhaya emerged winner in 2:27:01 whereas Gongqa Lungile settled for second position in 2:27:23. Qhina Mthandazo was third after clocking 2:30:44.
Bonjesi said he could have performed better but failed to because of strong winds which affected the performance of all athletes.
He also blamed his recovery from an injury for contributing to his failure to win a medal during the contest.
“We experienced bad weather. There were very strong winds and that affected the finishing times of all runners. I also struggled with an Achilles’ tendon injury which I sustained in December.
“But I am now getting better and this was my first race since returning from that injury. I struggled from 22 kilometres to 27 kilometres but, gradually, I started feeling better and shot my way into the top 10,” Bonjesi said.
He said his performance has motivated him to aim for a better performance in the Two Oceans race.
“This was my preparation for my first Two Oceans 56-kilometre race in April. I hope to compete in the West Coast Marathon next month in preparation for the Ultra Marathon,” Bonjesi said.
The Malawian was named Whalers Athletics Club’s Athlete of the Year 2018 and the Best Male Athlete for Year 2016.
