South Africa body donates equipment to Maba

South Africa Boxing Association (Sanabo) has donated assorted equipment to Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) to help the body revive amateur boxing which has been inactive for two years.

Sanabo president, Andile Mofu, who is also International Amateurs Boxing Association (Aiba) instructor, presented 10 pairs of gloves, 10 pairs of head gear, three punching bags and an electronic scale.

Maba president, Justice Katika, confirmed having received the equipment when Mofu conducted Aiba level three coaching course in Lilongwe two weeks ago.

It is a donation that has given us a starting point. We will be able to organise championships. We will partly use the equipment during local tournaments,” he said.

Katika also promised to take good care of the equipment.

Meanwhile, Katika said the recent coaching course underlined Maba’s ambition to revive amateur boxing after staying in doldrums for over a year.

“We deliberately incorporated former boxers into the system. The training has equipped them with skills that would help us revamp the sport. We have been stagnant for some time and we are bouncing back.

This is a statement to the nation that from district, regional and national levels, we have strong structures,” he said in reference to Perpetual Mkandawire, Jobson Adams, Philemon Nkhakamila Banda and John Masamba who were among the coaches that attended the training.
