CHAMPIAN—I am different from the rest

South Africa-based reggae dancehall artist Khillaz Champian has been signed to one of Cape Town’s most influential record labels, DVERSCT Records.

According to Champian, real name Ronald Makweya, the deal marks a milestone in his music career as DVERSCT is a big record label comprising international artists from Africa and Europe.

“I am confident and strongly believe this deal will open doors and connect me to the rest of the world. This is a big step I have taken since I started my music journey,” the 25-year-old artist said.

DVERSCT records is home to household artists such as DaFaith, Nik DaFrik, Tamcelynn and Lord Harmony.

Champian has, meanwhile, called for support as he plans to release more songs under the new label.

He said: “I urge Malawians both in Malawi and those living in the diaspora to keep on supporting me, even more than they did in the past because I am now starting to pluck the fruits of my labour. With their support, another Malawian artist can make it big in South Africa and Africa as a whole or even to the world.”

To conquer the world, Champian said he does music in three genres and two styles.

“I do reggae, trap fused reggae and trap fused dancehall. I also do pure conscious reggae for those who are not used to modern styles of singing and I fuse reggae and dancehall with trap for the new generation,” he said.

The artist grew up around friends and relatives who loved hip hop and dancehall. He started as a hip hop artist and later switched to reggae and dancehall.

In 2017, Champian released ‘Far from Dem’ which was produced by DJ Sley and featured Positive Yut.

In 2018, Champian’s single ’Ma champian’ featuring Blakaad topped Malawi Reggae Dancehall Circuit chat for four consecutive weeks.

Some of his other songs include ‘Tisapite ku Ntchito’.

The artist has collaborated with reggae dancehall artists such as Desert Eagle, Mad General of Mad Character Crew, Ishan Capital and Awiri.
