South Africa tour for Muleso – Mphande champ

The sponsor’s of the Muleso- Mphande individual chess champion have set the hype ahead of the competition after disclosing that the inaugural champion would be sent to compete at South African Open.

The Muleso- Mphande Open will take place at Simama Hotel from July 4 to 6 and is considered as the biggest tournament in Central Region in a decade.

One of the co-sponsors, Mayeso Mphande, said they felt duty bound to give Malawian players international exposure.

“International exposure is of paramount importance for the development of the individual chess athletes and the game in general. It’s not that we are loaded with millions, but we view this as a productive gesture from people that wish chess good,” he said.

However, Mphande said this promise was valid if the South African open takes place soon, otherwise the champion would be sent to any other nearby international tournament by road.

Central Region Chess League chairperson, Khama Chindole, thanked the co-sponsors for the kind gesture.

Sponsored to a tune of K400,000 , the Muleso-Mphande open is expected to draw top players from all over Malawi including celebrated players Petros ‘Razorblade’ Mfune, Alfred Chimthere, Gerald Mphungu and Chiletso Chipanga

Meanwhile, reports indicate that top Zambian chess players may make a surprise appearance at the tournament.

The event is expected to revive the CRCL glory days of 2006 when Dilawo Contractors and Cifu group of companies spoiled the region with lucrative tournaments that uncovered talented players like Edgar Khan, Misheck Nyirenda, Fiskan Mwagomba and the Mwale brothers George, Joseph and Chuma.
