South chess concludes Saturday

Southern Region Chess League’s (SRCL) Presidential Initiative for Sports schools’ qualifiers concludes Saturday at Saint Andrews High School in Blantyre.

The body’s Chess in Schools Coordinator, Maggie Ngugama, said they had been holding preliminary round games at various centres in the region for the past two weeks.

“So far the exercise has been encouraging and we have selected finalists from four centres,” she said in reference to Saint Patricks Academy, Joyce Banda Foundation, Chisapi Boys, Jacaranda Secondary, Army Secondary, Kalibu Academy, Likangala Secondary and Zomba Catholic Secondary.

Ngugama said as a way of promoting chess from the grassroots, they had invited some players from primary schools to battle it out with seniors.

In the boys’ category, Yewo Sanga, David Mkomba, Happiness Masuku, Chiyembekezo Chilembwe, Dumisani Maweja, Rafik Namangale and Quinton Mkhwapa will date senior boys while Michelle Chimbe, Mirabelle Chafumuka, Daisy Huwa and Nagawa Gwala will star in the ladies’ section.

Meanwhile, the Northern and Central regions have identified their representatives to the national finals.

The Northern region identified Davis Ngwira, Greatson Mkandawire, Innocent Chirwa, Gift Mkandawire, Wanangwa Harawa and Oliver Kaputolo in the boys’ category with Ulemu Mbewe, Mary Chisale, Oprah Phiri, Anne Simwaba, Sarai Kaunda and Mary Newa completing the girls’ category.
